Most families start The Letter Mysteries or Letters and Sounds between ages 5 and 7, whenever a child is ready to begin learning letters. From there, each level follows your child's skills, not their age — some kids move through faster, some slower, and that's normal.
No. Every level comes with detailed, step-by-step lesson plans (or, for The Letter Mysteries, video lessons that do the teaching for you), so you always know exactly what to say and do. No background in reading instruction or phonics is required.
They teach the same starting skills — letters, sounds, and phonological awareness — but in different formats. The Letter Mysteries is video-led: your child learns directly from me on screen, and the workbook simply reinforces what they just watched. Letters and Sounds is a fully independent, parent-taught curriculum with detailed lesson plans for you to teach each letter yourself, no video required. Many families use The Letter Mysteries as the fun introduction and then move into Letters and Sounds for a complete, structured plan — but either one on its own will take your child from not knowing their letters to being ready for Beginning Reader.
Start with The Letter Mysteries or Letters and Sounds (see above for which format fits you). Don't start with Beginning Reader or Level 3 yet — those both assume letter-sound knowledge is already solid.
Both letter-stage resources include mastery checks along the way. Once your child can confidently name and sound out every letter and is starting to blend simple two-letter words, they're ready for Beginning Reader.
Beginning Reader includes assessments before and after each unit. Once your child reads and spells CVC words in every short vowel family, knows the first 25 high-frequency words, and reads simple sentences with ease, they're ready for Level 3's more advanced spelling patterns.
